Dr. Harvey Martz has been Senior Minister of St. Andrew since 1994. Before coming to Highlands Ranch, he was Senior Minister at Calvary United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs for 22 years, a congregation that relocated and went through three building programs. Harvey has a Master of Divinity Degree from Southern Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Iliff School of Theology. He has also served as Campus Minister at Montana State University. Dr. Martz has led national workshops on Leading Congregations through Change and on Creating Congregations of Generous People. Harvey has been the chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry of our conference, the credential granting group for United Methodist pastors and has served as chair of our conference New Church Development Committee. Since Dr. Martz’s appointment as Senior Minister, St. Andrew’s average worship attendance has doubled from 600 to 1250 and income has increased by 900%. The church was relocated to a new site and larger building in 2005 and will break ground the summer of 2009 on a new building phase encompassing an additional 40,000 square feet. Harvey has had articles published in several national church publications and he and his wife Judy authored a chapter in the book, _The Befuddled Stork_. Harvey and Judy are the parents of Todd who lives in Colorado Springs and of Meredith who recently graduated from the University of Denver. Harvey enjoys reading, bicycling and movies. He wants our church to be a beacon for a balanced United Methodist perspective of mind and heart, spirituality and justice. In June 2008, Dr. Martz was honored at the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference session with the Bishop’s Award For Excellence in Leadership.

Cindy Bates attended seminary at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. Cindy served St. Luke's United Methodist Church for almost 19 years. She then moved to Omaha to do a program at Creighton University in Christian Spiritual Formation, working toward certification as a Spiritual Director. While at Creighton, she served St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Over the years, Cindy has had ministry opportunities in several different areas. She began her work in the church doing youth ministry, but her emphasis recently has been with adult ministries. Pastoral care and grief support work have been a large part of her responsibilities, with interest in fellowship programming, missions and work project ministry, working with small groups and discovering new ways to empower laity. Her undergraduate degree is in theatre and she has a passion for the place of the arts in the church.

Cindy is pastor of Adult Ministries including Spiritual Growth, Adult Education and Singles ministries.

Finding ways to relax and enjoy God's creation is also an important part of her life. She takes daily walks with Murphy, her Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier. Golfing, biking, going to the theatre, gardening and traveling are some of her favorite ways to spend time, as well!

About

What I’m passionate about is following a Jewish Rabbi who walked the earth 2,000 years ago. Through his example he offered the world a new paradigm to live by that included “love for enemies,” “heartfelt compassion,” and “sacrificial service.” He modeled a “Gospel” lifestyle and inaugurated a new moment in history called God’s “kingdom” or “reign.” His reign puts relationships before programs, integrity before efficiency, and peace before prosperity. With all of my mind, heart, soul, and strength I want to follow my Rabbi’s example learning to live in love, cultivate compassion, and care for the “poor, widow, and orphan.”

My Calling

My calling is to use words in ways that invite people into the awe-inspiring adventure of discipleship. Words chosen carefully and delivered effectively, words painting pictures of hope and of the wonders of a world wowed with love—God’s love. Words that encourage, edify, educate, and empower people to become all that God has created them to be.  If you’d like to connect with me or check out some of my work please visit my website www.dalefredrickson.com.

More About Dale

Here’s a little more about me. My name is Dale Fredrickson and I was born and raised in Northglenn, Colorado. My first departure from the Denver Metro area was an extremely cold and lackluster year in Chicago, although one of the highlights of my time in Chicago was being introduced to real pizza.  Besides food, I enjoy hiking, biking, camping, rafting, kayaking, reading, running, writing, and playing basketball. All of these activities are made meaningful by the presence of my friends and family.

My second departure from Denver came in the summer of 2006 as I entered the exciting world of Southern California where I began a Ph.D. in Religious Studies with a focus on the New Testament at Claremont Graduate University. My educational background includes a double major in Biblical Studies and Youth Ministries from Colorado Christian University and a Masters Degree in Biblical Studies from the Iliff School of Theology.

I’m awed by the Bible’s honesty in the face of life’s difficulties.  Over and over, the Psalms express deep longing and yearning for God through prayers: these prayers that put words to the raw pain and extraordinary joy of human life.  In the midst of persecution, pain, and exile at the hands of the Babylonians, the Psalmist declares: “Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!”  And, in a moment of exuberant delight, Psalm 103:11b-12 declares, “so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us.” And then, there’s the prophets who speak with conviction and who imagine new moral possibilities for God’s people.  My personal favorite that was proclaimed at the height of the Civil-Rights movement by Martin Luther King Jr. is Amos 5:24.  “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

Compelled By Jesus

Lastly, I’m compelled by Jesus’ vision and invitation to all recorded in the Gospels and echoed in the letters and Acts of the Apostles.  Jesus’ call to discipleship is an invitation to experience “abundant life (John 10:10).”  It’s an invitation to follow Jesus’ example of love, compassion, and justice for all.  Jesus’ call compels me to live in community, care for the poor and sick, and fight systems of social, economic, and political injustice.  In short, it’s the adventure of a lifetime!

My passion for ministry arises from personal experience. Many thoughtful teachers, pastors, and friends nurtured, challenged, and informed my faith journey. I desire to be a pastor deeply committed to the world-transforming love of God.  I desire to listen, lead, and act with compassion and empathy to the pains and joys of the faith family at St. Andrew UMC, the community-at-large, and our global world.

I am fortunate to be married to Stacy Marie who loves to play soccer and spend time with friends and family, and I am also the proud father of Trey Carl, known to me as T.C, as well as Irayna, known to us as “Iree.”

Melanie and her family have been part of the St. Andrew family since 1981.  She joined the Staff in 1991 to develop a ministry focused on those new to St. Andrew.  Since that time she has grown the ministry to become Welcoming Ministries, fostering an environment where all persons feel welcome, valued and safe; where each can find a way to connect and be engaged with others in study, fellowship and/or service.

Prior to being on Staff, Melanie was very active in the several churches she and her family were part of – from Bemidji, MN, to Pittsburgh, PA, to Milwaukee, WI, to Littleton, CO.  She taught Sunday School, helped write curriculum for Vacation Bible School, lead several summers of VBS, directed Christmas “pageants,” chaired the Children’s Ministries ministry area, established an annual Advent Festival, played in a hand bell choir, participated in many Bible Study classes and attended numerous training seminars.  She was also very active as a volunteer in the children’s schools, and with the Denver Junior Symphony Guild.

Melanie grew up in Montana and graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Elementary Education.  She and her husband, Dale, have two adult children and two wonderfully delightful grandsons. When not spending time with her family or the St. Andrew family, Melanie enjoys time with their Sheltie pup, Max, gardening and walking.
