Jerry Herships, Associate Pastor
Jerry’s story is a familiar one. Former
bartender/stand-up comic/mall Santa hears God’s call to leave the
bright lights of show biz and dedicate his life to doing the Lord’s
work. You’ve heard it a million times.
Jerry got his Bachelor of Science from Western
Michigan University in 1986. Jerry moved to Los Angeles in 1987 with
the intention of Hosting The Tonight Show only to discover
Jay already had the gig pretty much locked up. After bartending for
a few years, Jerry became a comedian performing all over the country
and Canada. It was while hosting a game show at a Hyatt Ballroom in
Baltimore that Jerry realized he was built for a higher call
(nothing against Baltimore). He moved to Denver to attend Iliff
School of Theology at the age of 40 and received his Masters of
Divinity in 2008. He joined St. Andrews Clergy Staff full time later
that same year. In addition to his work at St. Andrews, Jerry
currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Wesley
Foundation.
Jerry has a beautiful wife Laura, to whom he
has been married to since 1992. His son Hudson turned 11 this year
(2008) and loves video games, buttered noodles and his dog, Rocky
(he feels strongly for his mom and dad as well). Jerry has a passion
for reaching out to those who were told there is only “one way to do
the God thing” and loves to be in dialogue with people who either
don’t trust organized religion or feel funny singing hymns they
don’t know. Jerry’s focus at St. Andrew is young adults, the
veteran’s ministry, alternative worship and the doughnut table. In
his free time, Jerry likes learning about wine, men’s fashion and
the future of religion. He’s a Libra.
