  1. How would you define “character”? 

  2. When an athletic coach says that his or her main goal is to build or develop character in young people, what characteristics would you look for to see that character is being developed?

  3. What examples have you seen of people attempting to win at any cost? What examples have you seen of people not being willing to compromise their integrity or character just to win?

  4. Someone says that we can tell a lot a person’s character from they way they play golf. What do you think about that?

  5. What did you know about the Biblical character Jacob before this morning’s sermon?

  6. What does “Jacob” mean in Hebrew? How did Jacob get that name? What does “Esau” mean?

  7. What examples do you think of in the story of Jacob of him living up to the meaning of his name?

  8. Why do you think Jacob became so important in the history and heritage of the Israelites?

  9. What does Jacob show us, both positively and negatively, about character?

  10. Where does Jacob belong in this time line of the people in the Hebrew Bible or the Old Testament?
