Study Questions – Chapter 8

  1. The Bible uses the word “heart” to mean our deepest self. How do we use the word “heart”?  What examples can you think of?

  2. “The heart can be turned toward God or away from God.” What experiences or places cause your heart to be turned away from God? What experiences or places help your heart to be turned toward God?

  3. Are their times when it is necessary to harden one’s heart or to close one’s heart?

  4. Discuss: “The reason we need to be born again is that we have closed hearts.”

  5. “A thin place is anywhere our hearts are opened; a means whereby the sacred becomes present to us.” What are some thin places for you, places, locations, or experiences where your heart becomes more open and receptive to God?”

  6. “Worship can become a thin place….The primary role of music within worship is to become a thin place.” What experiences of worship or of music within worship have helped open your heart to God?
