Study Questions – Chapter 1

  1. When Jesus approaches the persons who will be his first disciples, does he ask them to worship him or to follow him? What do you think the difference is? What do you see people doing today with Jesus-worshiping him or following him?

  2. In this first chapter of Mark’s gospel, what is Jesus mostly doing? What might this mean for what the community of Christ should be doing today if we want to imitate Jesus?

  3. Jesus is portrayed healing many people in these first few verses. What are they being healed from? What difference is there between being healed and being cured? What do you need to be healed from? Have you asked Christ for that?

  4. The people who wrote the Bible believed in demons and believed that people could be possessed by demons. How might we explain that today? What other ways that they explained things around them might be seen differently and explained differently today?

  5. Mark tells us that Jesus faithfully observed the Sabbath on a regular basis. How might this be an example for you?

  6. Next week we will see Jesus having conflicts and arguments with some people in chapter 2 of Mark. Who are the people he had the most trouble with? Who might he have the most trouble with today? Did Jesus ever criticize anyone, and if so, whom and why?
