Study Questions – Chapter 6

  • What have you learned about Jesus so far after reading the first five chapters of Mark? What are some descriptive statements you would make about him so far?

  • What evidence have you seen that shows the humanness of Jesus?

  • Why have the religious leaders become upset with Jesus?

  • In Jesus’ time people saw a meal as a sacred event when people bound themselves to each other by eating together. What is mealtime like for you and what would you like it to represent?

  • In part of today’s reading there is a story about Jesus using just a little bread a few fish to feed 5000 people. This story appears six times in the four gospels. Why do you think the early Christian community saw it as so important?

  • What does it mean to say that Jesus is the bread of life?  What do you know about the abundance or scarcity of food for the masses in the first century?

  • In the story of feeding the multitudes the disciples had an attitude of seeing only scarcity and Jesus’ attitude was one of seeing abundance. Which attitude do you adopt most of the time?
