Study Questions – Chapter #9

  1. How do you feel about the man who comes to Jesus asking for help for his son? He says that he is a combination of belief and unbelief, faith and “unfaith”. Do you think he is a weak person, or do you identify with him in his mixture of belief and unbelief?

  2. Why do you think the vision on the mountaintop includes the Old Testament figures of Moses and Elijah? What is significant about them?

  3. How do you feel about the disciples in their argument among them about which of them was the most important or the greatest?

  4. Why does Jesus involve a child in this discussion of greatness and importance? What do you know about the status of children in the ancient world?

  5. Rick Warren opens the book “The Purpose Driven Life” with this statement: “It’s not about you.” What relationship do you see between that statement and chapter 9 of Mark’s gospel?

  6. Have you ever had an inspiring spiritual experience like the disciples had on the mountaintop with Jesus and just wanted to remain in that state of inspiration and ecstasy? What happened?
